Sam Creinin, the owner of former Hyde Park establishment, Creinin’s Unique deli, passed away on Dec. 18, 2016.
He opened the local neighborhood deli with his brother, Al, in 1946 at 53rd Street and Harper Avenue, and in the mid-70s opened another deli in the south suburban neighborhood, Homewood. Creinin met his late wife, Ruthe, while working at the Hyde Park deli.
Creinin’s life was spent owning delis as well as working at them. He worked at Fannie’s deli in the Lincolnwood neighborhood where he was able to get the gig as the “Vlasic pickle man,” appearing in one of the company’s commercials.
Creinin also worked at a deli called Kaboff’s in Northbrook, Ill.
He grew up in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood and served in the Army during World War II.
Creinin had two children with his wife: his daughter, Rhonda and his daughter Shelley, who passed away in the 1990s.
Services for Creinin have already been held.
