Thanks to 17 points and several rebounds by 6’8” senior center Manny Patterson, the Kenwood Academy High School Broncos boys basketball team clinched the Class 4A 2017 Regional State Championship title after a 69-45 victory over Proviso West High School on Friday night March 3, in Hillside, Ill.

“It was a tough battle (in the beginning),” said Marlo Finner, head coach of Kenwood Academy. “We came out and played very well over our past two games.”

Kenwood, who now currently awaits Whitney Young High School for their third match-up of the season at Proviso East, kicked off March Madness with a bang after earning two impressive victories over Leyden High School and Proviso West last week. The two victories were a perfect anecdote to a tough playoff loss suffered two weeks prior at the hands of Chicago Public League rivals Whitney Young High School in a 80-58 blowout defeat on their home floor. Currently, both teams remain tied 1-1 for the season series.

In game one of the state playoffs, the Bronco’s would release an aerial assault against Leyden High School. Led by slender sharp shooting guard Antonio Reeves, who managed to drain shot after shot by making four huge three-pointers impacting the game on both ends of the floor. Reeves finished with 12 points, while leading the Broncos to a 60-30 victory on Wednesday March 1.

“I’ve been putting up 150 shots a day,” Reeves said. “Putting up extra shots a day helped get me into a rhythm.”

In game two, the Broncos were led by the amazing guard play of senior Bryson Langdon. After scoring eight points in the first half, Langdon donned a killer crossover move that brought the Proviso West crowd to its feet. Langdon briefly left the game in the first half due to a fluke ankle injury that hindered his performance. Kenwood led 39-16 at halftime.

Broncos senior center Manny Patterson took over the scoring load. Dominating the low post with 17 points, in addition to two amazing crowd pleasing two-handed dunks that would put the game away for good.

Final Score: Kenwood 69, Proviso West 45

With the win, the Broncos improved to 2-0 in the 2017 IHSA 4A State Playoffs. They will play Whitney Young High School in a rematch at the Proviso East High School gymnasium, on Wednesday March 8.
