After earning back-to-back victories last week to clinch the 2017 Illinois High School Association 4A State Regional Title, the Kenwood Academy High School boys basketball season came to an emotional end, after suffering a 59-49 defeat at the hands of Whitney Young High School on Wednesday March 8, at Proviso East Gymnasium, 807 S. 1st Ave., in Maywood, Ill.

In the first half, the Kenwood Broncos would control the tempo thanks to the defensive toughness and ball pressure of guards Bryson Langdon and Octavius Parker, who helped generate leads of 1 (10-9), 4 (16-12) and 3, giving them a 22-19 edge at the half.

The Broncos defense would also tame the Young Dolphin’s leading scorer and All City first team player Lucas Williamson, who was held to only 2 points through the first 16 minutes of play.

Kenwood’s Manny Patterson would also contribute in a big way, as he stuffed the stat sheet by tallying 4 points and five rebounds before suffering a minor injury that forced him to exit the game. Patterson returned soon after.

In the second half, the Broncos would rest on their laurels and watch the Dolphins explode on a 9-0 run, building a 6-point lead at 28-22 with 5:46 remaining in the third quarter. Their run was led by the hot shooting of junior guard Xavier Castaneda, who led all scorers with 13 points while earning his team a 10 point victory.

Final Score: Whitney Young 59, Kenwood 49

With the loss, the Broncos fall to 1-2 on the season against the Dolphins earning them the tiebreaker and a season series win.
