Name of South Side development organization revealed at ward meeting

The name and website for a development organization planned to have a major impact on the South Side were revealed at a 20th Ward community development meeting, March 28, at the Akarama Center, 6220 S. Ingleside Ave.

Representatives from Next Street, an organizational consulting firm, have been giving presentations outlining a proposal for the new organization that wants to “drive and manage the growth” coming to the neighborhoods of South Shore, Woodlawn and Washington Park in the wake of the construction of the Obama Presidential Center (OPC). Until now, the name was withheld from the public.

At his Tuesday night meeting, Ald. Willie Cochran (20th) announced that the organization is called the Woodlawn, Washington Park and South Shore Community and Economic Development Organization. Its website gives information about the organization, shares what it has identified as opportunities and needs in the communities mentioned in its name, offers community members a chance to apply to be a part of the its team and the opportunity to offer input on its next steps.
