Known as “the tri-captain seniors,” after leading a group of seven freshmen players during the 2017 Kenwood Academy High School women’s soccer regular season, defender Melina Cuevas, midfielder Ying Zhang, and defender Helen Mui, have demonstrated high character and leadership ability for their teammates on and off the field.
Cedeno explained, that without the help and leadership of Cuevas, Zhang and Mui, the Kenwood girls soccer program would not have grown as fast as it has over the years.
He said Cuevas, especially, has made great strides during her time on the team.
“That’s a testament to her hard work,” said Miguel Cedeno, head women’s soccer coach at Kenwood Academy. “Cuevas was able to go from her sophomore year of not making the varsity team to senior year making all conference.”
Thanks to the program’s growth, the trio are well on their way to the next level after earning collegiate academic scholarships from the University of Illinois of Champaign Urbana (Cuevas, 3.75 GPA), the University of Illinois Chicago (Zhang, 3.80 GPA) and Howard University in Washington, DC (Mui, 3.25 GPA) where they will attend school in the Fall of 2017.
“They have earned academic scholarships at the collegiate level,” said Cedeno, with expectations of graduating three seniors. “As student athletes, I am proud of the work they’ve done in the classroom.”
In previous years, before the trio were dubbed the “tri-captain seniors,” Cuevas, Zhang and Mui helped lead their team to an undefeated season while clinching a conference championship for Cedeno in his first year as head coach back in 2014.
