George Alexander Blakey was born on June 23, 1939 in Chicago, Ill. to the union of George and Mary Hyla Blakey (both deceased).
Blakey attended Wendell Phillips Elementary School, Parker High School, Allen University (Bachelor of Arts), and Governors State University (Master of Arts). George also spent time at Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill.
In his younger years, Blakey was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, took piano lessons, and went to Summer camp on several occasions.
George spent summers outside of Momence, Ill., and owned a horse named “Buck” who would buck anyone off his back within 15 minutes. One day, while resting his gun on the top of his shoe; Blakey shot himself in the foot.
The love of Blakey’s life was his wife, Gloria Simpson Blakey (deceased), together they shared many memories with family and friends. Blakey’s granddaughter Shaina fondly remembers that he taught the grandkids how to ride bikes and drive cars.
Blakey worked for the Office of the Inspector General from 1965-2003. At this office is where he met his life-long friend, Hope Little.
As an adult, Blakey had a steady hand, patience, and focus as he spent countless numbers of hours, in the basement of his Hyde Park home located on the corner of 48th Street and Greenwood Avenue, painstakingly putting together battleships, submarines and model army planes. His collection had amassed over 200 models at one time.
Blakey was an avid risk taker and could often be found at the Horse Track or Casino. He always had a track or a boat story to tell. He was a Horseshoe Diamond member and he and Gloria were seen dining at the premiere 7 Star club. Blakey always generously shared the gifts and dinners he received.
