Hyde Park edges Kenwood 66-64 in “The Battle of Hyde Park”

In a battle for neighborhood bragging rights, the Hyde Park Academy High School Thunderbirds defeated the Kenwood Academy High School Broncos, 66-64 in overtime on Thursday night, Jan. 18, at Kenwood Academy, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave.

In the first half, the Thunderbirds jumped out to a 12-2 run. Thanks to the hot shooting of point guard Andrew Anderson, who scored 4 of his teams first 12 points. Building a seven-point lead at 16-9 to end the quarter. In the second quarter, after falling behind by as many as 13 points at 24-11, the Broncos countered with an 11-2 run of their own, trimming the lead to 24-22 with 3:32 remaining in the half. Following an 11-2 run by the Broncos, Kenwood senior Nas Turner would continue his team’s hot streak by scoring 10 points in 15 minutes of the half, including a layup to end the half, reducing the Thunderbirds lead to 30-29.

In the second half, both teams matched each other basket for basket, finishing regulation tied at 55, sending the game into overtime. Turner made several key plays down the stretch in the fourth quarter, finishing with 20 points, including a pair of clutch free throws, a spectacular dunk and a few highlight-worthy plays. Turner’s spectacular play put his team in position to win, after earning them a final possession that ended with a long heap from half court by Broncos guard Elijah Stewart, nearly grazing the rim as time expired.

After a long heap missed by Stewart sending the game into overtime, Thunderbirds star Andrew Anderson finished the game with two clutch free-throws, giving his team a lead at 66-64 to close out the victory.

Final Score: Hyde Park 66, Kenwood 64

With the victory, the Hyde Park Thunderbirds earned bragging rights in the “Battle of Hyde Park,” leading the series 1-0 in the teams only match-up of the season.
