Michael Elliot Teller, retired history teacher at Kenwood Academy High School, passed away unexpectedly at home, November 3, 2017.
After graduating from Hyde Park High School, earning his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in History from University of Chicago, and subbing at DuSable High School, Teller began his 30-year teaching career at Kenwood, where he pioneered the “Law in American Society” program, training students to be attorneys, pages, and legislators. Every March he took students to Springfield for Mock Legislature and Supreme Court Sessions.
Post-retirement Teller was an election judge, census-taker, and volunteer at Peggy Notebeart Museum, Illinois Masonic Hospital, and North Pond.
Teller was preceded in death by his daughter, Rachel Teller and parents James, Henry David Teller and Florence Elizabeth Morris Teller.
He was the former spouse of Joan Wagner of Portland, Ore.
Teller is survived by his son Martin Teller of Portland, Ore.; brother Stephen Teller of Pittsburg, Kan.; nephew James Teller of Kansas City, Mo.; and his dear friend of many years Helen E. Baker.
