To the Editor:
We have been made aware that the handful of civic groups attempting to put forums together in our wards for the aldermanic elections are being ignored by the incumbents. As of Monday afternoon, neither Ald. Sophia King (4th) or Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) responded to requests for participation by the League of Women Voters, Indivisible Chicago, or First Unitarian Church, which is working in cooperation with Indivisible.
That’s a shame.
In light of the national political landscape, it is important that voters have the ability to make educated decisions about their representatives. Our communities deserve the opportunity to hear candidates’ positions and have their questions answered.
Please contact your alderman and tell her to participate in these forums. If they do not, we hope you will bear this in mind in the upcoming elections. We need accessible elected officials who will respond to the needs of residents. Democracy dies in the dark.
