To the Editor:
Herb Kaplan writes longingly of the “innocent days” when Hyde Park women “rushed to Jackson Park to ‘chain’ themselves to trees to protect the park.” What a short memory Mr. Kaplan has! These women sought to protect the park from Mayor Richard J. Daley’ s plot for a major extension of Cornell Drive to Stony Island Avenue through the southwest portion of the park.
Today, Cornell Drive is the sacred cow of ill-informed preservationists, even though it has blocked easy access to the park’s interior since it was constructed in the 1960s.
