An opposing view on the opera

To the Editor:

The review in the March 6 edition of the HP Herald of the production of Ariodante at Lyric is the most unintelligent review I have read in 70 years of reading reviews of all sorts.

The fundamental obligation of any reviewer is to attempt to understand the work of art, not to exhibit the reviewers prejudices.

It is perhaps enough to note that the production creates something witty, intelligent, thought provoking, and timely, by taking a Handel opera with an unpleasant and offensive story and an unbelievable and more offensive ending, and restoring it to its locale in Ariosto, and restoring to it Ariosto’s outrage at the fate and treatment of women.
